The short version

Who can use Understory

You must be at least 18 years old and able to enter a binding agreement to use Understory. By using it, you confirm that you meet this requirement and that the information you give us is accurate.

What Understory is, and what it is not

Understory reads the health and fitness data you connect and the documents you upload, and presents readings, trends, and educational context to help you understand your own body. It is a general-wellness and educational tool.

Understory is not a medical device, and it does not diagnose, treat, prescribe, or dose. Nothing in the app is medical advice, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified professional. Always consult your clinician before making a health decision, starting or stopping a treatment, or acting on any reading. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call your local emergency number right away.

Your account

You sign in with Sign in with Apple. You are responsible for keeping access to your device and Apple ID secure and for the activity that happens under your account. Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been used without your permission.

Acceptable use

• Use Understory only for your own personal, non-commercial wellness.
• Don't upload data that isn't yours or that you don't have the right to share.
• Don't misuse the service — no attempts to break, overload, reverse-engineer, or gain unauthorized access to it, and no using it to build a competing dataset or product.
• Don't rely on Understory as your only source for any health or medical decision.

Your data and content

You own your health data and the content you add. You grant Understory the permission it needs to store and process that content for the sole purpose of providing the service to you — computing your readings, connecting your record, and generating your reports. We never sell it or use it for advertising. The full detail, including our processors and your deletion rights, is in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

AI features

"Ask" and parts of your reads use artificial intelligence to explain your own data in plain language. AI can be wrong or incomplete, so treat its answers as educational context, not instructions, and confirm anything important with your clinician. Understory routes anything that looks urgent toward appropriate care rather than trying to handle it itself.

Third-party services

Understory works alongside services you choose to connect — Apple Health, wearables such as Oura and Whoop, a skin-analysis processor, lab and DEXA providers, and, where you have one, your clinic. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms and privacy policies. We're not responsible for third-party services, and connecting them is your choice.

Subscriptions and payments

Understory is free to use during early access. If we introduce paid features, they will be sold through the Apple App Store: the price, what's included, and any auto-renewal terms will be shown to you before you buy, billing is handled by Apple under your Apple ID, and you manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple account settings. We'll never start a charge without your clear, prior consent.

Apple App Store terms

These terms are between you and Understory, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. The app is licensed, not sold, to you under Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement, together with these terms; where they differ, these terms govern except where the Apple EULA requires otherwise. Apple has no obligation to provide support or handle any warranty or claim relating to the app, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

Disclaimers

Understory is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent the law allows. We don't warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or accurate for your particular situation, or that any reading reflects your true clinical state. Your health decisions remain yours and your clinician's.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Understory and its team are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any health decision you make based on the app. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including your rights under consumer-protection and health-privacy laws.

Changes to the service and these terms

We're building Understory actively, so features may change, and we may update these terms as the product evolves. If we make a material change, we'll announce it in-app or on this site before it takes effect. Continuing to use Understory after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Ending your use

You can stop using Understory and delete your account and all associated data at any time from Profile → Delete my account & data. We may suspend or end access if these terms are seriously or repeatedly broken, or where we must to protect members or comply with the law.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and subject to any mandatory consumer protections of the place where you live. Your privacy rights under the Washington My Health My Data Act and other applicable health-privacy laws are described in the Privacy Policy.

These terms work together with our Privacy Policy. We'll update them as the product evolves; material changes will be announced before they take effect.
